We Don’t Just Hire Interns. We Build Engineers.

At Xorbix Technologies, we’ve always believed that great engineers aren’t only found, they’re developed. That’s the idea behind our Intern Mentorship Program, and it shapes everything from how we match interns with mentors to how we run our Friday afternoon syncs.

Here’s how it works, and why we think it’s one of the most important things we do.

The Problem With “Sink or Swim”

Most internship programs work the same way: hand the intern a laptop, point them at the Jira board, and see what happens. Some interns figure it out. Most spend their first few weeks lost, afraid to ask questions, and contributing far less than they’re capable of.

We’ve been there. It doesn’t serve the intern or the team.

The Xorbix Mentorship Program exists to solve that problem, not by handholding, but by building a real structure that accelerates learning without adding chaos to senior engineers’ days.

One Intern. One Mentor. One Pod.

The foundation of our program is simple: every intern is paired 1:1 with a dedicated mentor, ideally the pod leader to whom they’re assigned.

This isn’t a coincidence. When your mentor is also the person who owns the project that you’re working on, every conversation becomes immediately actionable. You’re not getting generic advice, you’re getting the exact context you need for the exact work in front of you. The IDE setup, the deployment workflow, the unwritten rules of how the team names variables, all of it comes from the person who knows it best.

Matching is finalized before the internship starts and is based on two things: project alignment (interns own real tasks that feed directly into the mentor’s roadmap) and shared technical interests, whether that’s Data Engineering, React, C#, or cloud infrastructure. Shared interest turns a professional relationship into something more like a true mentorship.

Structure Without Bureaucracy

We’re intentional about not over-engineering the meeting cadence. Senior engineers are busy. Nobody benefits from a calendar full of check-ins.

So, we keep it lean: one 30-minute 1:1 every Friday morning. We time it to align with existing meeting blocks, so there’s minimal context switching for the team.

Each sync uses a simple three-question framework:

  • What did you produce or learn this week?
  • What is blocking you right now?
  • What do you need from me in the next week?

That’s it. Short, focused, and directly actionable. No status theater, just real conversation.

Interns also join their pod’s daily standups from day one. Week one is observational: they listen, take notes, and absorb the team’s language and rhythm. In week two, they’re reporting just like everyone else: their tasks, their progress, their blockers. It’s a fast way to feel like a real member of the team, not just a guest.

Remote Doesn’t Mean Disconnected

Xorbix is fully remote, and we take that seriously when it comes to new interns. There’s no watercooler moment, no “hey, swing by my desk”, which means we have to be deliberate about connection.

Every mentor kicks off week one with a live environment setup session. It’s the most high-impact hour you can spend with a new intern: walk them through the dev environment, the repositories, the tools, and give them their first real look at the codebase. Removing technical friction on day one is worth more than almost anything else you can do.

Beyond setup, mentors serve as the intern’s primary anchor on the team, making sure they know who to message, feel comfortable asking questions, and never feel like they’re working in isolation.

What We’re Actually Building

At the end of the day, the Xorbix Mentorship Program isn’t just about better interns. It’s about building a stronger engineering culture, one where senior engineers grow as leaders, and where talented students see a real path forward.

Some of our best hires started as interns. Some moved on to other companies. Either way, the goal is the same: every person who comes through this program should leave a better engineer and a stronger professional than when they arrived.

That’s not just good for them. It’s good for Xorbix.
